US port strikes suspended as “tentative agreement”reached

04 October 2024, Just Drinks

US port workers, represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), reached a tentative agreement on wages, temporarily suspending a strike that affected more than 30 ports from Maine to Texas. The industrial action, which began on October 1, was driven by concerns over low wages and the potential impact of automation on jobs. The United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), representing container carriers and port associations, had proposed a wage increase of nearly 50%, but the offer was rejected as it failed to address job security concerns related to automation.

The strike caused significant delays in container ship processing at affected ports. While the agreement on wages has paused the strike, both parties are set to continue negotiations on unresolved issues. The workers' master contract has been extended until January 15, 2025, giving time for further talks. The details of the agreement reached on October 3 have not yet been disclosed.

Canada’s Lassonde to build new US beverage plant

02 October 2024, Just Drinks

Lassonde Industries, a Canadian food and beverage manufacturer, plans to invest approximately $200 million in a new beverage production facility in the U.S. The 200,000-square-foot plant will be constructed next to the company’s existing site in New Jersey. Once completed, it will replace the old facility. The investment aims to strengthen Lassonde’s competitive position in the U.S. Northeast by enhancing operating efficiency, increasing production capacity, and reducing costs through improved logistics and production processes.

Construction is set to begin in early 2025, with production gradually transitioning to the new facility starting in 2026 and concluding by 2027. Lassonde’s CEO, Vince Timpano, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to expand its presence in the U.S. market, support growth in private label and branded beverages, and improve profitability. The new facility may also provide opportunities for future production capacity and capabilities expansion.
