Optimize Your SEO Strategy with Google Search Console 📈

SEO can feel overwhelming, especially with all the information and tools available. For beginners, these tools can sometimes lead to wasted time with little to show for it.

Luckily, Google Search Console (GSC) provides reliable information about your website, like its rankings and traffic. This allows you to focus on areas that are already doing well, which can lead to better results.

Instead of spending months or years chasing after perfect keywords, GSC helps you build an SEO strategy based on the facts of your current situation.

Step 1: Review Your Traffic, Rankings, and Opportunities

The first step in improving your SEO with Google Search Console is to review your website's visibility and traffic. This will help you understand how well your site is doing and guide you in making the right improvements. 📊

By default, the data shows web search results from the last three months. 📅

Applying Filters for Better Insights:

To make the data more accurate and relevant, you can add filters:

1. Exclude Branded Search Traffic:

If your business is called "Bowler Hat," you’ll want to filter out any searches containing “hat” to remove brand-related traffic. 🎩

   - Click "New" > "Query" > "Queries not containing."

   - Type “hat” and click "Apply."

2. Filter by Target Geography:

Focus on your primary target region. For example, if your business operates in the UK: 🇬🇧

   - Click "New" > "Country."

   - Select "United Kingdom" (or your country) and click "Apply." 🌍

These filters will help you see your real exposure and traffic from Google Search. 🔍

Analyzing Real Traffic:

After applying these filters, you’ll see your true traffic data. Now, enable all four key metrics (clicks, impressions, CTR, and position) and review them individually. 🧐

- Clicks: The number of times users clicked on your site. This is the ultimate goal. 🎯

- Impressions:How often your site appears in search results. Comparing clicks to impressions shows the size of the opportunity. 🚀

- CTR:This metric shows how many people click on your site after seeing it in search results. A low CTR, even with a good ranking, suggests an area for improvement. 🛠️

- Position: Your average ranking in search results. Lower positions generally receive more clicks, but this isn’t always the case. 📍

Identifying Opportunities:

Carefully examine your keywords, considering clicks, impressions, CTR, and position to find areas where you can improve. 🔍

Setting Optimization Targets:

As you review your keywords, pick three or so that have potential for improvement. Aim to increase clicks by improving their rankings and CTR. Record these keywords in your SEO strategy, then move on to the next step. 📝➡️

By following this simplified process, you’ll be better equipped to focus on what really matters, leading to more effective SEO results. 💪🚀

Step 2: Landscape Analysis

Before you start optimizing your content, it’s important to understand the search landscape for your target keywords. This will help you see where the opportunities are and where you should focus your efforts.

Let’s use a real-world example from a business we’re working with, called Stairfurb. They sell glass banister kits, and we're going to analyze the keyword "glass banister."

Opportunities:

  • Improve organic ranking (move from Position 2 to Position 1).

  • Improve exposure in organic shopping listings.

Fortunately, Search Console also gives you some intel on product listings in the Search Appearance Tab of the Performance report (Performance > Search Results > Search Appearance tab).

Step 3: Optimize

Spending time in Google Search Console (GSC) can uncover many opportunities to improve your SEO. By focusing on the right areas, you can make quick and effective changes that boost your website’s performance.

Steps to Optimize:

1. Filter Out Branded Traffic: Focus on your target geography and filter out any branded search traffic. This helps you see the real opportunities.

2. Review High Volume, Low CTR Keywords:Look at keywords that have a lot of impressions but a low click-through rate (CTR). These may need better optimization.

3. Analyze the Results: Review your data carefully. Look for patterns that can help you understand what’s working and where you can improve.

Approaches to Try:

- Keywords in Positions 2-5: These are easier to improve with small tweaks. Focus on moving them up in the rankings.

- Top 3 Keywords with Low CTR: If a keyword is ranking well but has a low CTR, consider tweaking the metadata (like title tags and meta descriptions) to make it more appealing.

As you go through this process, keep notes on what changes you make and what results you see. Over time, you’ll start to see patterns and understand what works best for your site. This will help you refine your approach and continue improving.

9 Ways To Improve Shopify SEO & Boost Sales 🚀

Shopify has become a top platform in the eCommerce world, with over a million businesses using it to connect with their customers.

Big brands like Netflix Merch Shop, Gymshark, and Kylie Cosmetics have thrived on Shopify, using it to simplify their operations and increase online sales.

This success has made Shopify a popular choice for new sellers wanting to take their business online. Since 2014, Shopify's market share among CMS platforms has grown from 0.3% to 6.5%.

However, it's important to note that Shopify is specifically designed for eCommerce. When it comes to online stores, Shopify has a much larger market share, especially in the United States, where it leads with 28%, compared to WordPress (with WooCommerce), which holds only 17%.

So, how can you make your Shopify site stand out from the competition?

Understanding Shopify SEO

The basic principles of Shopify SEO are similar to those of any other eCommerce website, with one key difference: You need to make the most of the tools within the Shopify platform and work within its limitations.

1. Optimize Your Shopify Store Structure 🏗️

Ensure your store is easy to navigate, with a clear hierarchy. Use categories and subcategories wisely, and create a logical path from your homepage to product pages.

2. Improve Page Load Speed🚀

A faster website not only improves user experience but also ranks better on Google. Optimize images, use a content delivery network (CDN), and consider a faster Shopify theme.

3. Use Relevant Keywords 🔍

Conduct keyword research to find what your customers are searching for. Incorporate these keywords naturally into your product titles, descriptions, and meta tags.

4. Optimize Product Pages🛍️

Each product page should have a unique title tag, meta description, and URL. Include high-quality images with descriptive alt text and write compelling product descriptions.

5. Create High-Quality Content✍️

Start a blog on your Shopify store and regularly publish valuable content related to your products. This not only helps with SEO but also engages your audience and builds trust.

6. Build Backlinks 🔗

Backlinks from reputable sites improve your store’s authority and ranking. Reach out to bloggers, influencers, and industry websites to get your products featured.

7. Optimize for Mobile📱

Ensure your Shopify store is mobile-friendly, as a significant portion of online shopping happens on mobile devices. Google also prioritizes mobile-optimized websites in its rankings.

8. Use Structured Data📊

Implement structured data (schema markup) to help search engines understand your content better. This can enhance your search listings with rich snippets, like star ratings and prices.

It is recommended to use one of the apps because, in the long term, it is beneficial. They stay up to date with new schema type introductions, and you don’t need to change codes every time there is a change regarding schema implementation or new features.

By implementing different types of schema, your webpage can achieve enhanced visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through rich snippets.

9. Monitor and Improve Your SEO📈

Regularly use tools like Google Search Console and Shopify’s built-in SEO analytics to monitor your store’s performance. Identify areas for improvement and keep optimizing.

By applying these strategies, you’ll enhance your Shopify store’s SEO, attract more traffic, and ultimately boost your sales.

Keep Up with Google’s Content Refresh

Google’s recent updates to its Video SEO best practices provide valuable insights into effective strategies for refreshing your content. These guidelines emphasize the importance of keeping your video content not only up-to-date but also aligned with the evolving expectations of users and the latest search engine standards.

By following these updated practices, you can ensure that your content remains relevant and visible, helping you meet the needs of your audience while maintaining strong search engine rankings. These insights are crucial for staying competitive in the ever-changing digital landscape, where fresh and well-optimized content is key to attracting and retaining viewers.

The Breakdown:

Remove Outdated Content:

Conduct regular content audits to eliminate outdated information, ensuring that your material remains relevant and authoritative

Increase Information Density: Focus on concise, direct communication to enhance user engagement and improve search engine relevance. Use clear, precise language that addresses key topics efficiently.

Incorporate Fresh Updates: Continuously add the latest industry insights, data, and best practices to keep your content current and valuable to your audience.

Simplify for Clarity: Revise complex language and outdated terminology to improve readability and ensure your content is easily accessible to your target audience.

Regularly updating and refining your content according to these principles will help maintain its relevance and effectiveness, driving better performance and engagement in search results.
