WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE D2C WORLD?

Last week, there was a lot of attention when people were hit with the news that JPMorgan Chase had acquired Nutmeg last week.

“Interesting new chapter” for digital wealth management in the UK, as the first UK Robo adviser becomes the latest to join the list of those acquired or largely funded by established financial giants," said Boring Money chief executive Holly Mackay. So now the question is, what will this kind of deal measure up for the market, the firms, and themselves?

Director of Wealth, Altus Consulting, Simon Bussy has said that the deal is unexpected and it should also prove to be a symbiotic relationship. He also claims that the D2C space is a "bloody battlefield and is certainly not for the faint-hearted".

“Partnering may be the first step but ultimately, we expect to see most of the current ‘Robo-advisers’ get acquired or die. Those propositions that can augment increasingly smart technology with smart humans to provide a richer, better client outcome will win.” Simon Bussy says that the deal made with JPMorgan Chase definitely gave him a moment of celebration and a sigh of relief in uniform measure.

There is plenty of hybrid and digital services that have lessons to learn. They have to figure out a way to differentiate themselves. "Interestingly those with an existing, older customer base may be on a stronger footing, at least in the short-term,” claims Simon Bussy.

BRAND OF THE WEEK is...

This Stockholm-based company serves e-bikes and e-mopeds to individuals in Sweden. They've been funded $11M by Skabholmen Invest. The mission is to reduce pollution, noise, congestion and develop a seamless platform for transportation.

“The current funding will allow Vässla to transform from a classic direct-to-consumer (DTC) retail model into a more scalable rental model with recurring revenues," claims Rickard Bröms, Founder of Vässla.

They plan to offer three different options;  Vässla Club for people, delivery, and enterprises, which will have a monthly, weekly, and hourly subscription respectively. Vässla aims to reach other European countries like Berlin, Vienna, Hamburg, Madrid, and the UK.

“We do not disclose any specific financial numbers, but to date we have sold approximately 5,000 Vässla Mopeds and remain the market leader in Sweden, beating the global market leader, NIU," says Bröms.

They comprise 35 employees, where new ones start every week. They intend on hiring software developers, battery engineers, drivetrain experts, and operations managers all over Europe for more exposure.
