Montana to ban TikTok in 2024 over security risks

Montana is set to make history by becoming the first state in America to ban TikTok starting in 2024! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

The state legislature passed a bill on Friday banning the short-form app over security risks related to its ownership by China-based ByteDance.

The bill now goes to the desk of Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte before it can become law, while TikTok said it plans to fight the legislation.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Fines and penalties galore ๐Ÿ’ธ

Under the Montana legislation, TikTok would face fines of up to $10,000 per day per violation if it continued to operate in the state. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

In addition, the state could impose penalties on Apple and Google if they allow users in Montana to download the app from their respective app stores. Talk about some serious consequences!

๐ŸŒŽ International espionage concerns ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The Montana bill says that โ€œthe Peopleโ€™s Republic of China is an adversary of the United States and Montana and has an interest in gathering information about Montanans, Montana companies and the intellectual property of users to engage in corporate and international espionage.โ€

The legislation also says that Chinaโ€™s government โ€œexercises control and oversight over ByteDance, like other Chinese corporations, and can direct the company to share user information, including real-time physical locations of users.โ€ Woah, that's some major spying allegations! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿค– Tech giant vs the government ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

TikTok blasted the passage of the Montana bill as an โ€œattempt to censor American voices.โ€

But with CEO Shou Zi Chewโ€™s appearance before a House hearing last March sparking deep skepticism expressed by lawmakers about Chinaโ€™s influence over TikTok and the communist regimeโ€™s ability to track user data via the app, as well as TikTokโ€™s efforts to curb misinformation and harmful content, analysts said the chances of a U.S. ban on the app increased. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

And let's not forget about Donald Trump's attempt to ban TikTok in the final months of his presidency!

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Shop the controversy? ๐Ÿค”

With all this drama, some ecommerce businesses might see an opportunity to capitalize on the TikTok ban by creating merchandise related to the controversy. From "Save TikTok" t-shirts to "Montana vs ByteDance" mugs, the possibilities are endless! ๐Ÿค‘

Meta Collaborates with Retail Media Networks to Test New Ad Product

Did you hear the news?

Meta is jumping on the retail media bandwagon with its latest ad offering! It's like they're saying, "Hey, retailers and e-commerce advertisers, let us help you boost your performance!" ๐ŸŽ‰

So what's the deal with this new ad tool?

It's called Managed Partner Ads Lite (MPA), and it's all about personalized ads that drive sales. Meta is teaming up with retail media networks to help brands create ads on their platforms. This way, retailers can expand their media networks and push specific brand partners or product SKUs.๐Ÿ›๏ธ

And guess who's already testing out this cool new tool?

Walgreens and Dollar General! They're both part of the pilot program and have been giving it a go for the past few months.

So, what's the deal with retail media anyway?

It's all about creating targeted ads for specific audiences. Think about it like this: you're scrolling through your feed and see an ad for a product you've been eyeing. It's not a coincidence - that ad was specifically targeted to you based on your browsing habits and preferences.

They're on a mission to create ad products that are not only focused on driving online purchases but also in-store purchases. Talk about an omnichannel approach! ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Local Inventory Ads - Borrowing a page from Google's book

First up, they've introduced local inventory ads. You know those ads that show you what products are available in stores near you? Yeah, those are local inventory ads. And Meta's taking a page from Google's book with this one. It's a popular ad offering among brands and retailers, and now Meta's jumping on board. ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Managed Partner Ads Lite - Improving ad offerings post-iOS 14 fallout

But wait, there's more! They've also got Managed Partner Ads Lite (MPA) on the table. This is a big deal for larger retail media networks because its effectiveness will depend on the first-party data available. Basically, Meta's trying to find new ways to improve its ad offerings after the fallout of iOS 14. And let's be real, we all love a good comeback story.

Meta's on a mission

Meta's on a mission to take its ad game to the next level. They're doubling down on omnichannel-focused ad products that drive both online and in-store purchases. And with local inventory ads and MPA, they're definitely on the right track. So get ready for more personalized ads and effective marketing strategies. Meta's not playing around!

According to Alicia LeBeouf, head of industry, retail superstores, and groceries at Meta, they've always been about building products based on performance. And with the retail media networks skyrocketing in the past few years, they knew they needed to create something to help these networks with their partners. So, they came up with Managed Partner Ads! ๐Ÿ‘

And let's talk about the benefits, shall we?

Managed Partner Ads allows for a bigger audience pool, better inventory, and more inventory. Plus, early results from the testing show that this ad unit is driving incremental, omni-channel performance for brands. So, if you want to boost your sales and get better consumer insights, Managed Partner Ads is the way to go!

But that's not all, folks!

Meta is also introducing local inventory ads, which will help retailers drive local demand for in-stock products. And with the store location and inventory data, these ads will be served to people within a distance radius established by the advertiser. ๐Ÿช

However, local inventory ads may not be as effective on social networking sites compared to search engines like Google or Bing, as users might be more sensitive about sharing their location data. But hey, if MPA can add a level of scale and efficiency that's significant, we could see some serious money being shifted away from rivals.

So, the bottom line is, Meta is aggressively innovating within their advertising suite and rolling out some new features. And as Katya Constantine, founder of agency Digishopgirl Media, reminds us, it's a pretty mature product! ๐Ÿ™Œ
